Best selling albums in USSR

The list of the best-selling albums in the USSR includes recordings from the mid-70s to 1991. For albums released after 1991 see Best Selling Albums in Russia.

The best-selling album in the USSR is Disco Alliance by the Zodiac. By 1983, the Disco Alliance had sold 5.8 million copies. ^[1] According to the russian magazine Muzycalny Prognoz (# 1, 1992), by the end of 1991 6.483.470 copies were sold. The best-selling album of an international artist in the USSR is Festival by dutch band Teach-In with a sales of 1.693.200 copies. According to the Melodiya label, the group Vesyolye Rebyata (Russian: Весёлые Ребята) set an absolute record for sold records (albums and singles) in the USSR and Russia – 179.850.000 copies. ^[2]

Soviet music market

From the early 70s to the mid 80s, the Soviet music market was one of the largest in the world. Only in three countries, besides the USSR, did the album reach the 6 million mark – Japan, United Kingdom and the USA. In 1970, label Melodiya released nearly 200 million records. Due to the difficult economic situation, by the end of the 80s and early 90s, sales fell to 80 million per year. Until 1989, Melodiya remained the only label in the USSR.

In the Soviet Union, there were no charts and certification in the usual form. Founded by Melodiya in 1981, the Golden Disc was awarded not for high sales, but for the ideological and artistic merit of the recordings and the performers’ mastery. The Central Lenin Museum received the first Golden Disc in the USSR. The hit parades published in the newspapers Komsomolskaya Pravda and Moskovsky Komsomolets were compiled according to the results of a reader poll.

The most popular and accessible format in the USSR was LPs. In the late 1980s, a vinyl record cost 2.5 rubles, a cassette 4.5 – 7 rubles, and a CD – 20 rubles. The cassettes were released in small editions (most of them were compilations of the best songs). In 1989 Melodiya sold 11 million cassettes and 89 million vinyl records. Compact discs appeared in the USSR only in 1990, and in 1991, 200.000 units were sold. In Russia, cassettes outstripped record sales only in 1993; CDs were ahead of cassettes only in 2005.^[3]

Methodology of charts

Information about album sales were rarely published in the USSR. But in the late 70s, all Melodiya factories began to indicate the order number (заказ) and circulation (тираж) on the LP’s back cover. Circulations of new editions of album were set by tradable structures that form orders for factories, taking into account consumer demand (in total there were 35 thousand retail outlets in the USSR). Thus, if you find all editions of album, you can calculate the total shipments.

For example, Alexander Rosenbaum’s Moi Dvory had 64 different editions and each had its own circulation. If we add up the circulations of all editions, we get the total figure of shipments of any album. The total shipments of a LP may be underestimated if: there are editions without indication of circulation or not all editions are found. Comparing the sales published in the Soviet press and the total sum of all editions, it can be noted that this method allows you to find out about 75 – 85% of total shipments. This figures do not include cassettes and CDs.

Best selling albums by international acts

The volume of shipments of foreign artists is more difficult to assess, beacuse the Aprelevka Record Plant (Апрелевский завод грампластинок) did not always indicate the circulation of licensed albums (judging by the secondary vinyl marketin Russia, most of the licensed records were made there). Therefore, the list did not include Band on The Run of the Wings group, Imagine of John Lennon, ABBA and others albums, which were very popular in the USSR. For example, the Arrival by ABBA took first place in the polls of readers of Moskovsky Komsomolets magazine in 1979, gaining 1571 votes, beating Alla Pugacheva’s Mirror of The Soul.
