Certification levels for Gold, Platinum and Diamond in different countries

This page lists the criteria for certification of musical works in different countries and territories. The data is grouped by music format and by country. The current (or last applied before closure) levels for albums, singles, music videos and ringtones are listed first. Next are the certification criteria with explanations by country. For each country, the certifying organization, current levels, all previous levels with comments, and history of the awards are indicated. The tables by format and by country indicate the required number of sales and the required number of streams (for singles and albums) for certification.

The page lists the criteria for the following formats, countries and territories:

Certification rules depend on the following factors:

Date restrictions: all recordings may be certified or only recordings released after a certain date.
Procedure: the label must apply for certification or certification is automatic.
Release date: thresholds are the same for all releases or depend on the release date
Certification date: what levels were applied at the time of certification of the music product.
Formats: what formats are taken into account for certification: physical, digital, ringtones, streaming. Sales in all formats are counted together or there is a separate category for each format.
Streaming: what type of streams is included: only premium or free and premium; only audio streams or audio and video streams. When was streaming added to the certification. Streaming may count towards certification for all releases or only for products released after a certain date. How many streams are equivalent to an album or single in a given country.
Country of origin: levels may vary for domestic and international releases.
Genre: levels may vary for different genres (usually a separate category for Jazz, Blues, Classical and Children’s music).
Monetary revenue: in some countries, income may be used as a sales equivalent or even as a primary criterion.
Multi-disc releases: separate rules may apply for releases consisting of two or more units (LP’s, cassettes, CD’s, DVDs, etc.).

Argentina

Certifying organization: CAPIF – Cámara Argentina de Productores de Fonogramas y Videogramas (Argentine Chamber of Phonograms and Videograms Producers)

CAPIF began certifying sales of singles and albums in Argentina in 1980. The Diamond album certification was introduced in 1999. In 2001, CAPIF lowered the thresholds for albums released since January 1, 2001, and also removed the Singles and Compilation categories. Since 2009, two separate categories for digital and physical sales in Argentina. In 2013, album certification levels were lowered for the second time. In 2016, CAPIF updated its levels and added a streaming category, so now Argentina has two separate categories for singles – streaming and downloads. The new thresholds apply to all albums released since July 1, 2016.

Certifying organization: ARIA – Australian Recording Industry Association

In November 2014 ARIA launched Diamond Award for albums selling 500,000 copies. For the purposes of the ARIA Diamond Award, sales of Albums, plus the sales of the Singles and Tracks from that Album accrued after 1 July 2014, are aggregated (streaming not included).
From 1 July 2015 Qualifying streams are eligible to contribute to the accreditation of Singles. Those eligible streams are to be factored at the conversion rate applicable at the time that the streams occurred. For accreditation calculation purposes only, from March 2022, official content streams on YouTube may be included in Qualifying Streams. From May 2017 Stream Equivalent Albums (SEA) are eligible to contribute to the accreditation of Albums.

Premium streams are taken into account for singles releases from January 1, 2015 and free streams for singles releases from July 1, 2023 with a ratio:
1 single sold = 188 premium streams = 843 free streams

Premium streams are counted for albums released since January 1, 2017. The record must contain at least 6 songs to be considered an album. A maximum of 12 streamed tracks of an album are counted for the album award. The number of plays of the top two songs is reduced to the average number of the rest.
1 album sold = 1880 premium streams

Singles sales awards include streaming since 2016. Since June 2017 album figures can include stream equivalent albums. A maximum of 12 streamed tracks of an album are counted for the album award. The 2 most streamed tracks are not taken into account with the actually achieved premium streams, but only with the average number of (maximum) 10 following tracks. Conversion factor for albums and singles is unknown.

As of 2008, Belgium had different levels for international DVDs, Belgian DVDs (a Belgian product distributed nationally) and regional DVDs (a Belgian product limited to one language region – French or Dutch).

In 1990 ABPD introduced music recording certifications for albums. Music DVD certification was launched in 2002. In November 2008, the ABPD created another category “Produtos Digitais” for digital albums and singles. Thus, until December 2016, digital and physical albums were certified separately. Since 2017 certification includes physical album sales, paid digital downloads of full albums, paid digital downloads of tracks / singles from the album and audio / video streaming and Produtos Digitais ceased to exist as a separate category. In 2022, Pro-Música Brasil introduced separate requirements for audio and video streams.

Canada

Certifying organization: Music Canada. Before 2011 known as CRIA – Canadian Recording Industry Association.

Certifications for music recordings in Canada began in 1975. From late 1990’s for Certifications involving multi-unit packages (i.e., 3 or more vinyl LPs, or 2 or more Compact Discs in a package) — each unit within the set counts as one unit towards Certification, provided pricing reflects the typical fair market value of each of the constituent components of the package.

In 2008, CRIA added a separate category to certify digital singles. The Digital Download and Physical Single categories were retired on September 16, 2016, and units sold are eligible under the Single Award guidelines. As of April 1, 2021, the certification categories for Ringtone and Music DVD have been retired. While Music Canada no longer accepts new certification applications for these categories

In September 2016, Music Canada launched the new Single Award, which combines on-demand streams with digital download and physical single sales. In July 2017, Music Canada updated the Album Award guidelines to include Track Equivalent Album (TEA) and Stream Equivalent Album (SEA) units toward Certification.

1 album sale = 10 tracks sales = 1500 on-demand audio streams
1 single sale = 1 digital download sale = 150 on-demand audio streams

Note: Certifications levels for Albums and Physical Singles are based on the recording release date

Germany

Certifying organization: BVMI – Bundesverband Musikindustrie (Federal Music Industry Association)

Music recording certification was introduced in Germany in 1975. Music video certification was launched in 1990. Since 1994, BVMI has certified jazz repertoire (albums and singles) released after January 1, 1992. In 2022, BVMI added a separate category for Classical music released since January 1, 2020. In June 2014, BVMI introduced Diamond certifications for albums and singles, which can only be awarded to music products released after January 1, 2013. Kids repertoire, Comedy and Audio Books can also be certified under the album rules.

Since June 1, 2014, premium streams have been included for singles certification, and free (ad-supported) streams were added on January 29, 2016. Since January 29, 2016, premium streams are taken into account for albums, regardless of the release date.

The calculation applies to streams made up to December 7th, 2023: The two most played tracks of an album are not taken into account with the premium streams actually achieved, but with the average amount of the ten following tracks.
The following applies to streams from December 8th, 2023: The most played track of an album will be taken into account with 70 percent of the streams achieved, the following 11 tracks will be counted in full.

Streams are converted into albums in the ratio:
1000 premium streams accumulated until April 5, 2018 = 1 album sale
2000 premium streams accumulated since April 6, 2018 = 1 album sale

Streams are converted into singles in the ratio:
100 premium streams accumulated until April 5, 2018 = 1 single sale
200 premium streams accumulated since April 6, 2018 = 1 single sale
1320 free streams accumulated since December 30, 2022 = 1 single sale

Note: Certifications levels for Albums and Singles are based on the recording release date

Certifying organization: MAHASZ – Magyar Hanglemezkiadók Szövetsége (Hungarian Recording Industry Association)

Gold and platinum awards for album and single sales existed in Hungary even before MAHASZ was founded in 1992. In 1974, the threshold for gold award was 50,000 for albums and 100,000 for singles. In 1992, MAHASZ introduced a new certification system for music recordings. Until January 1, 2018, there were separate levels for International Albums, as well as Jazz, Classic and World Music.

Since January 1, 2018 certification includes streaming. Different coefficients apply for premium and free (ad-supported) streams.

Album equivalent from 1.01.2018 to 12.07.2023: 1 album sale = 1000 premium audio streams = 5000 free audio streams
Album equivalent since 13.07.2023: 1 album sale = 3280 premium audio + video streams = 14700 free audio + video streams

Single equivalent from 1.01.2018 to 12.07.2023: 1 single sale = 100 premium audio streams = 500 free audio streams
Single equivalent since 13.07.2023: 1 single sale = 328 premium audio + video streams = 1470 free audio + video streams

Italy

Certifying organization: current FIMI – Federazione Industria Musicale Italiana;
before 1992
– AFI – Associazione dei Fonografici Italiani

Sales awards have been given out in Italy since at least 1974. The album and single had to sell a minimum of one million copies to qualify for gold certification. At that time, the required sales level for albums was even higher than in the United States. Later, the AFI lowered the thresholds (the exact date is unknown, but new criteria were already in December 1982). The last time API levels changed was in 1987. Since 1994, FIMI has been responsible for the certification of musical records in Italy.

From 1994 until January 1998 there were no awards for singles in Italy. FIMI resumed singles certification in 1999. In 2009, FIMI added multi-platinum certifications for singles. Diamond certificates for singles have been awarded since 2014.

Since 2014, single certifications include downloads and streaming. In 2018, streaming was included in album certification. According to the FIMI rules, the most streamed track on an album cannot exceed 70% of total streams. If exceeded, the contribution value of this track is reduced to 70 %.

Japan

Certifying organization: 日本レコード協会 (RIAJ – Recording Industry Association of Japan)

RIAJ certifies albums, singles and videos released after January 21, 1989. Until July 2003, separate levels were used for domestic and international repertoire. Japan does not have a Diamond Award, but instead uses an award called “Million”.

Since August 2006, RIAJ has certified paid downloads in the following categories:
着うた (R) – [Chaku-uta (R) – Ringtone]
着うたフル (R) – [Chaku-uta Full (R) – Full Ringtone]
PC配信 シングル – [PC distribution single – Digital Single]
PC配信 アルバム – [PC distribution album – Digital Album]

Since 2014, Full Ringtone sales have been included in Digital Singles sales. RIAJ is not certified gold or platinum for Ringtones (着うた (R)) sales. For Ringtones awards start at 500,000 – Double Platinum level.

In 2022, RIAJ introduced separate category for audio streams. All three formats (physical sales, digital sales, streaming) are certified separately.

Certifying organization: AMPROFON – Asociación Mexicana de Productores de Fonogramas y Videogramas (Mexican Association of Producers of Phonograms and Videograms)

In 2007, AMPROFON established separate criteria for certification of digital music sales (Internet Downloads / Mobile Digital Content Downloads). In 2008, AMPROFON expanded its digital certificate program by adding awards for Pre-loaded products. In September 2010, all types of digital album sales were merged with physical ones. At the same time, a new “Single Track” category replaced the “Single Track Downloads” and “Preloaded Single Track” categories.

For releases starting on November 1, 2020, the video streams of the single tracks included in the album to be certified can be added, where videos whose content is generated by the user are excluded. For Singles and albums released before November 1, 2020, only audio streams are taken into account.

Note: Certifications levels for Albums and Singles are based on the recording release date

Netherlands

Certifying organization: NVPI – Nederlandse Vereniging van Producenten en Importeurs van beeld – en geluidsdragers (The Dutch Association of Producers and Importers of image – and sound carriers)

NVPI launched certification program in 1978. Separate criteria apply for jazz and classical albums. In June 2009, digital sales of albums and singles were added for certification.

Streams count towards gold and platinum status for singles since July 2014.The number of streams equivalent to 1 single has changed over time:
from 1.07.2014 to 30.06.2016: 1 single sale = 100 premium streams
from 1.07.2016 to 31.12.2019: 1 single sale = 150 premium streams
since 1.01.2020: 1 single sale = 215 premium + free streams

Streaming albums may be included in the count starting January 1, 2015. Until 2019, the album equivalent unit was calculated for each album depending on the number of songs according to the formulа:
1 album sale = 150 x number of songs in the album (1500 for 10 track album, 1350 for 9, etc).

On January 1, 2020, NPVI began taking into account free (ad-supported) streams. Along with these changes, NVPI has set a new album equivalent unit of 2150 streams.

Certifying organization: IFPI Norge (IFPI Norway)

In 1974 the minimum requirement for a gold album was NOK 500,000 in sales (1 USD ~ 5 NOK as of 1975). Later, Albums began to be certified based on sales rather than monetary revenue. The exact date of the change in criteria is unknown, but already in 1986 awards were given for sales.

Digital downloads are included for all albums and singles released since January 1, 2006. From December 1, 2012 to May 18, 2014 streams and sales were a separate categories. On May 19, physical sales, downloads and streams were merged. Since 2014 album certification also includes streaming.

Current conversion factors are:

Poland

Certifying organizationZPAV – Związek Producentów Audio-Video (Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry)

ZPAV began certifying music recordings in February 1995. This procedure is available for all works released after January 1, 1993. ZPAV has separate criteria for Jazz, Blues and Classic music. If there is any doubt as to which category an album or video should be classified into, the Management Board of ZPAV will decide accordingly. The decisions of the Management Board are final. Another category, soundtrack, is original film music in which songs can make up no more than 20% of the recording length.

Prior to February 20, 2013, for multi-disc or multi-cassette sets, each unit in the set counted as one unit toward certification.

As of September 8, 2010, album certification may include digital downloads of individual tracks, ringback tone or master ringtones at a rate of 10 tracks = 1 album. Since April 2, 2014, album certification includes streaming. Streams accumulated up to February 28, 2017 were converted at the ratio of 2500 streams = 1 album. For all downloads and streams made from March 1, 2018, the new rules apply. The value of revenue of PLN 20 from digital downloads of any of the album’s titles in the form of a single audio recording (download), background music (ringback tone), telephone ringtone using only the original recording (master ringtones), revenue attributed to streaming to a given song – is equivalent to selling 1 CD or DVD audio album. The income of each song on the album is added up.

ZPAV includes streams in certification for singles first released after January 1, 2015. Until February 28, 2017, 1 digital download, 1 ringback tone, 1 master ringtone or 250 streams were counted as 1 single sale. From March 1, 2017 Singles awards are based on monetary revenue from streaming and digital sales. Revenue of PLN 2 counted as 1 single sale.

Switzerland

Certifying organization: IFPI Schweiz (fr – IFPI Suisse; en – IFPI Switzerland)

Since 2007, Switzerland has had a separate scale for albums in Italian and French.

Certification includes premium audio streaming since April 1, 2014 and ad-supported free audio streaming since January 1, 2023. The number of streams equivalent to 1 album sale depends on the number of songs in the album and its release date. The number of songs in the album is multiplied by the coefficient used at the time of the album’s release. The number of streams equivalent to the sale of 1 single is equal to the coefficient itself.

Coefficient values for premium streams:
since 1.04.2014 – 178
since 1.04.2015 – 116
since 1.01.2016 – 114
since 1.10.2016 – 108
since 1.08.2017 – 119
since 1.01.2018 – 127
since 1.01.2019 – 148
since 1.03.2020 – 175
since 1.03.2021 – 176
since 1.02.2022 – 174
since 1.01.2023 – 161

For free streams:
since 1.01.2023 – 1185

(e.g. for a 10 track album released after 1.01.2023 1610 premium streams or 11850 free streams are equivalent to 1 sale; for single released after 1.01.2023 161 premium streams or 1185 free streams are equivalent to 1 sale)

Music Video category can include DVDs, HD-DVDs, Blu-Ray, Downloads, VHS, Video Streaming Subscription (Netflix, Amazon Prime & Co.).

BPI Awards Timeline
April 1973 – Album awards initially based on revenue received by manufacturers (usually based on price to dealer).
January 1979 – The awards criteria for Albums switched to units sold.
February 1987 – Multi-Platinum awards were added.
January 1989 – BPI lowered thresholds for all Singles released after January 1, 1989
February 2005 – Downloads (as per sales measured by the Official Charts Company) are eligible to be added to the claimable total for both singles and albums awards.
July 2013 – Singles, albums and music videos are automatically certified whenever they pass a new threshold based on over-the-counter sales as verified by the Official Charts Company. Member companies are still permitted to manually certify titles based on shipments as before. Awards with release dates prior to 1973 now qualify for certification and titles released by non-members are also valid.
July 2014 – Streams from audio services are counted towards certified awards for singles. Inclusion of the streaming data is backdated to week one 2014 to ensure it remains consistent with the Official Charts database. Streams are converted using the same ratio that the Official Charts Company use to integrate streams into the Official Singles Chart (100 streams = 1 sale).
March 2015 – Streams from audio services are counted towards certified awards for albums. Counted only 12 most streamed tracks from the standard version of the album, the top two songs will be down-weighted in line with the average of the rest. The total of these streams will be divided by 1000 and added to the physical and digital sales of the album (1000 streams = 1 sale).
July 2018 – Video streams are counted towards certified awards for singles.
January 2023 – Video streams are counted towards certified awards for albums. Streams of an album’s 16 most streamed tracks are aggregated, the top two tracks neutralized to the average of the next 14 and the total streams divided by 1000 to create an album stream (1000 premium audio / video streams = 1 album sale).

Album equivalent from March 2015 to December 2022: 1 album sale = 1000 audio streams
Album equivalent since January 2023: 1 album sale = 1000 premium audio / video streams

Single equivalent from July 2014 to December 2016: 1 single sale = 100 audio streams
Single equivalent from January 2017 to June 2018: 1 single sale = 150 audio streams
Single equivalent since July 2018: 1 single sale = 100 premium audio / video streams = 600 free audio / video streams

Since 1979 BPI use separate criteria for so called non full price albums. BPI has changed the max dealer price for albums in this category several times, but the number of units required to achieve silver, gold or platinum status remains the same. Separate qualifying levels for budget titles dropped in July 2013.

Awards Timeline – The Main
1958 – The Gold record award is introduced. The Gold album is awarded for $1 million in sales based on the manufacturer’s wholesale price based on 33.3% of the list price for each album (until 1975, $1,000,000 equals ~ 600,000–700,000 units). The Gold single signifies one million copies sold.
1970 – The sales of prerecorded tape were counted into the qualifying equation.
1975 – RIAA revises qualifications for Gold album certification to require that an album also sell a minimum of 500,000 copies in addition to reaching $1 million in sales.
1976 – The Platinum award is introduced. The Platinum album is awarded for 1 million copies sold, with $2 million in sales at the manufacturer’s wholesale price. The Platinum single is awarded for two million copies sold.
mid-1970’s – When the 12-inch single was introduced commercially, each copy sold counted as two units for certification purposes.
1984 December – The RIAA introduces the Multi-Platinum category.
1985 – The RIAA began certifying commercially-available music video.
1989 – The Gold single certification is reduced to sales of 500,000 units. Extended-play versions of a single (vinyl EP, cassette maxi-single, three-inch CD maxi) count as two units for certification. The A side or its equivalent must be the same on all configurations to combine sales.
1991 – Short-form albums (Extended Plays except Extended-play versions of a single) are introduced and defined as configurations with at least three, but not more than five, cuts and a maximum running time of 30 minutes. The criteria for Gold short-form albums is 250,000 units sold; for Platinum, 500,000 units sold; and for Multi-Platinum, one million units sold
1991 – The RIAA began certifying Music Video Singles. The video must contain no more than two tracks, and the maximum running time is 15 minutes.
1996 – Criteria for short-form product are amended to match that of full-length product.
1996 – Enhanced CDs must contain 75% of the musical content of regular CDs.
1996 – Singles, both 7-inch and maxis, count once toward certification and are defined as having no more than four different songs.
1999 – The RIAA launches the Diamond Award which honors all artists who have albums or singles that have sold 10 million or more units. Previously, albums and singles that sold 10 million copies were certified 10x Platinum.
2000 – Longform music video certifications defined as having to contain at least 51% musical performance content.
2000 – The RIAA introduces the Premios de Oro y Platino Award to celebrate Latin music sales, specifically titles that contain more than 50 percent Spanish language.
2003 – CD/DVD hybrid certifications are accepted. Sales of CD/DVD hybrid units can be applied equally to each configuration.
2004 – The RIAA launches the digital sales award program. Digital sales now count towards certification.
2006 – The RIAA began certifying Master Ringtones.
2013 May 9 – The RIAA adds on-demand music streams to its Digital Single Award (100 on-demand audio / video streams = 1 single).
2016 February 1 – The RIAA updates its Album Award to include song sales and on-demand streams (1500 on-demand audio / video streams = 1 album).
2016 February 1 – Digital Single Award ratio updated from 100 on-demand streams = 1 download to 150 on-demand streams = 1 download.

Multi-disc certification rules
1983 – Criteria are introduced for multi-albums of three or vinyl sets or the tape/CD equivalent (counted as one unit). Criteria for a Gold multi-album award are 250,000 copies sold, and $2 million in sales. Platinum multi-albums are awarded for 500,000 copies sold, with $4 million in sales.
1991 – Criteria for the multi-box set are established. Gold multi-box sets require 250,000 units sold for sets containing three or more vinyl recordings or cassettes, or two or more CDs, with $2 million in net sales. Platinum multi-box sets are awarded for 500,000 units sold at a value of $4 million. Multi-Platinum multi-box sets require one million units sold at a value of $6 million.
1992 – Multi-box sets are redefined as two or more CDs (or the equivalent in LPs or cassettes) with a minimum running time of 120 minutes. The criteria are also changed so that each unit within a set is counted separately. The criteria for a Gold multi-box set now require sales of 500,000 units; Platinum, one million units; and Multi-Platinum, two million units.
1996 – Box sets are now called multi-disc sets.
1997 – An exception to the 120-minute running time rule for multi-disc sets is implemented for pre-1982 releases. The running time of these albums is no longer considered. The multi-box set running time is reduced to 100 minutes.

Post-release certification delay
1958 – An album or single could be certified on the day of release, or any time afterwards – and some albums (on the basis of advance orders) were certified before they were shipped.
1979 July – RIAA introduced a post-release certification delay: a minimum of 120 days after a record first went on sale. No more instant gold or platinum, the end of “shipped gold – returned platinum” era.
1980 January 4 – RIAA cuts the post-release date requirement to 60 days.
1997 – The RIAA cuts the post-release date requirement to 30 days.
2004 – When the RIAA first created the Digital Single Award in 2004, they did not implement any 30-day rule because there are so few digital returns.
2013 July 1 – Sales of albums in digital format become eligible at the release date.

Other important changes
1991 – Military PX sales are now included in sales tallies.
1994 – General certification requirements are amended to allow recordings to be eligible for awards regardless of the percentage of sales distributed through regular retail chains versus alternative markets. Club bonus records and free goods are now also included in sales tallies.
